This holiday is the first year I'm working a holiday fair that last three days. I've been putting a lot of planning into having all my supplies and everything ready, but the biggest thing I have to do is work on my designs!

When I start a new design, I usually start with a sketch. here are a bunch of ideas in really tiny sketches that I did in preparation for my new holiday designs.

Once I have some sketched ideas down, then I hit the internet! I love seeing what other people are making. If you are on facebook, a great group for holiday painting is here: Christmas/Holiday/New Years Face Painting. Another great resource is pinterest: for face painting, I like this user Face Painting School. I look to see what other people have done and how they've interpreted similar ideas.

For example, all the Mrs. Claus faces I found online all make her old with glasses. Although that's cute, I wanted to do something a little more...sexy and modern. I added snowflake stencils on her cheeks and gave her red glitter lips to make it pop!

With all the snowman faces I saw online, they all looked a little creepy. I wanted to make sure mine turned out jolly, not terrifying! I simplified the noes to be the carrot stick and I made the mouth little dots, like coal, but in a big smile. The edge of the face has blue around it to add some dimension. Then, just top if off with a cute hat! You could even add little holly to the hat!

By sketching first and then seeing what other's have done, I'm able to stay innovative. I use the online resources to find classic ideas that I want to try my hand at.  By the end of the day, I have a collection of paintings I've done that I can show to kids and get them excited about being painted! Here's a few image ideas to get you excited about holiday face painting!

Happy holidays and happy painting everyone!
