Makeup Tips for Hooded Eyes | Wayne Goss Makeup Artist

If you have hooded eyes then you know the struggle is real when it comes to applying makeup. Hooded eyes are basically eyes that have excess skin that make your eyes appear a bit droopy and may be due to aging or mature skin. Normally, mattes and neutral shades such as brown are used on hooded eyes but Wayne Goss, makeup artist and youtube personality,  shows us all the ways to apply makeup for hooded eyes and demonstrates how to incorporate color and even a bit of shimmer in his latest upload (which you can watch, below).

So when it comes to hooded eyes, what are we doing wrong? According to Wayne, he says we need to stop pulling the skin upward while applying makeup because as soon as we let go, what happens? The skin will fall back to place and you won't even see the makeup because of the excess skin so you're doing nothing for the shape of your eyes.

Secondly, he says what most people do incorrectly is apply the eyeshadow on the outer edge upwards instead of outwards which is the correct method for hooded eyes according to Goss. He uses Alexis Vogel's Shadow Shaper which is a makeup shaping tool to get precise application and uses this tool to demonstrate the do's (image on right, above) and don'ts (image on left, above) of how to apply the eyeshadow on hooded lids.

"The problem with hooded eyes is two issues, one, is that the bulk of this area here, is covering the lid and the other problem is, particularly as we get older with hooded eyes is this area which is right here, it comes down and it creates a fold here like this and it gives the illusion of a droopy eye" Wayne Goss explains in the video.

He begins with the lower lashline and says not to round out the eyes which will cut off the eyes which is a no-no on hooded eyes. Instead, he says to extend the line outwards ever so slightly so that you're elongating the eyes instead of rounding them. "So when you’re looking straight ahead, it’s more of a straight line" Goss says.

Wayne recommends to "curl your lashes and apply mascara first" for very hooded eyes so you can add a bit of definition and see what you're working with when working in the eyeshadow.

So this is where you apply Wayne's tip for hooded eyes - apply the transition eyeshadow shade at an angle going outwards. "Place it an angle so it's in the same line as your lower eyeshadow and then place it in the crease and extend it out and then bring it onto the eyelid as well" Wayne says.

You want to make sure two things, you cover the excess skin area with the eyeshadow and that the lower lashline and outer crease connect. Then, you apply the dark shade to the outer corner to further cover up the saggy skin, again, making sure the outer lines connect.

Soften things up with a fluffy blending brush to bring the look together. Then, take a dry cosmetic wedge and a bit of cream concealer to soften and correct the outer edges of the eyes. Wayne works his way from the outer edge of the going towards the middle of the crease for a softer more diffused look.

To highlight the look, he adds a bit of shimmer to the tear duct and brow bone to illuminate the eyes.

Well, there you have it, Wayne's tips to standout, ideal eyes that are "smokey and dark and elongated" all while covering up the excess, saggy skin!
