Summer is literally days away and it's time to glow up!
The soft, glowing skin makeup look is meant to appear fresh and natural, therefore it is the perfect makeup trend to try out this summer.
Natural, radiant skin gives that lit from within glow. It makes you look healthier and youthful. So how do you 'fake' the healthy glowing skin look?
Check out our previous post on the different types of highlighters and how to choose the right one then, come back here to read this complete guide to glowing skin plus 30+ glowing look ideas to try that will inspire you to try out the glowing skin trend.
PREPARING THE SKIN:
Powder and liquid highlighters tend to look patchy on oily skin, that's why we need to prepare our skin for the glowing makeup look. Clean and exfoliate the skin with a soft facial gel and a natural sponge. Cleanser will remove all the dirt and excessive oils on your skin and the makeup will look natural and even.
When selecting your primer, keep in your skin type (oily, dry, combination) in mind as well as the type of look you're going for (matte, glowy, etc). You may even want to try a primer with filtering pearls to blur out any imperfections, smooth and even out the canvas and create a radiant glow. A primer with an added illuminator is a plus when trying to achieve a glowy, dewy makeup look.
Highlighter is probably the most obvious product to achieve a glow but it's surprisingly not the only product that will help your skin achieve a beautiful glow.
Instead of heavy full-coverage foundation, which might be too heavy in the summertime, try applying a moisturizing bb or cc cream and use just a little bit of cream concealer to hide blemishes and problematic areas.
Keep the sculpting and contouring very natural, instead opt for a bronzer for a more soft sun kissed glow. A matte bronzer is ideal for oily skin and has the most natural finish. A bronzer is a great multi-purpose product and is a must have in the summertime!
How you apply the bronzer will give you a different effect.
Apply with a fluffy kabuki brush to the outer perimeters of the face to add a bit of healthy color to your complexion as well as give your skin a radiant glow.
Apply with a dense brush for a soft contouring effect.
A shimmery bronzer is great for dry skin but use a light hand if you'll be using other luminous skin products as you don't want to overdo it, especially if you're going for the natural look.
Bubblegum Pink & Blue Halo X Bronzed Skin Look
Pressed finishing powder isn't the best product for the summer glowing look, instead use a small amount of translucent powder to set the foundation on the nose, forehead and cheeks.
Once you've decided on the type of highlighter you'd like and the type of look you're going for, it's time to select the appropriate highlighter.
CHOOSING THE CORRECT HIGHLIGHTER FINISH AND HOW TO APPLY:
Now, that the base is complete and you've decided what type of glow you're going for, it is time to choose the appropriate finish for your skin type.
You can use cream, liquid or powder highlighting products to add that beautiful, healthy glow on the highest points of your face. Liquid or cream highlighters are great for dry or dull skin and powder highlighters are ideal for an oily skin type.
How-To Contour & Highlight Pale Skin
Apply to the areas you'd like to bring forward and really make stand out. The ideal places to apply the highlight would be to the cheekbones. temples, cupid's bow, brow bone, to the chin and along bridge of the nose.
Be considerate that highlighting is for elongating and bringing out the features. While contouring is for receding and diminishing them. Both products go hand in hand for a well sculpted face. Careful not to apply too much highlighter as this will also make any skin imperfections such as large pores, wrinkles, etc. stand out.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT HIGHLIGHTER SHADE:
Now that we've discussed the different types and finishes of highlighters and different ways to apply them it's time to select the correct shade!
So what shade would look the best on your skin? Use highlighting colors that will emphasize the natural beauty of your skin tone.
PALE / LIGHT SKIN:
Cool-toned shades such as pastel lavender, rose and sky blue with iridescent or frosty finishes look best on pale skin tones.
But it also depends on the look you're going for. Perhaps you're going for a glam party look, in this case, you might want to work with a warm color palette in earthy hues (peaches, terracotta, corals, gold, bronze, copper) all of which would enhance your beauty yet because these hues are on the opposites of cool toned, they'd really warm up your complexion in a more dramatic way. In this case champagne or white gold highlighter would really amp up your look!
OLIVE TO MEDIUM SKIN:
Golden and bronze glowy highlighters look wonderful on medium to tanned skin tones.
Gold highlighter really pops when paired with soft peach and coral blushes! It's the perfect combination for medium and tanned skin.
This combo instantly brightens up medium skin tones and peach and gold combined together are like a tropical dream! You can see in the photo above how a soft peach are ideal for daytime and in the image below, how a bright coral are more of an evening or party look. Both are stunning, you just have to be mindful of the different intensities they provide and the time of day and of course, where you're going.
DARK TO DEEP SKIN TONES:
Gold highlighters also work best with dark to deep skin tones. They bring an instant glow to the complexion without looking chalky or ashy.
The main idea of the glowing skin makeup look is to add a dewy dimension to the face, without any heavy contouring.
But don't forget, that the less is more when it comes to the all natural, summer glowy look! When working with on a clean yet skin like base and you apply a light hand of blush and highlighter on top, you get an instantly youthful appearance with a diffused, luminous, glowy like filter that sits on top of your skin. When done correctly, it just looks so ethereal!
Also, try to avoid highlighting problematic areas (dry skin, scars and pimples) and keep your overall makeup natural.
ALL OVER BODY GLOW:
Now that you're your face is radiant, it's time to add some glow to your body!
Are you planning on wearing strapless tops and spaghetti strap dresses this summer?
Add a hint of shimmer to your collarbone for that instant glam factor. Don't forget to contour and sandwich the highlight between some bronzer to make it really stand out.
TOUCH UPS AND LOCKING IN ALL IN:
Once your makeup look is complete, it's essential to use a setting spray or even a glow mist to set and lock in all your makeup. This will ensure your skin looks radiant and glowy and remove excess powders that are sitting on the surface of the skin. If you're out of setting spray, try rosewater, it's a great natural alternative that'll give you the same results, you might just need to re-mist a few times throughout the day to freshen your look.
Avoid adding more highlighter or excess product throughout the day. This will only add unreasonable layers and will give you a heavy cake face look which is not the look we're going for here. Instead, you can try a special buffing technique which will bring out the highlighter's shine and makes it look brighter on the skin. Oil blotting sheets are also great especially in the summertime to remove excess oil without having to reapply powder and it'll instantly freshen up your look.
