#PREP101 - How To Prep Skin Before Makeup Application For A Flawless Complexion Every Time

Creating a proper canvas before makeup application is absolutely essential to the  end result. You can spend hours upon hours with the best makeup techniques but if you're missing the two most important steps: the skincare prep and how you set your makeup then all the hard work that you're putting into your makeup application is practically going to waste.

These are the most important steps for me and I make sure I take the time to perfect them, especially when going full glam. It's also why my makeup is literally budgeproof, every single time, with little to no required touch-ups! So, here's everything I do to ensure I get the perfect prepped face before glam day.

I hate to say it, but the prep starts BEFORE the actual event. You can't just wake up and say, today I'm gonna look glam, that's just not how it works, at least not for my dry, skin type.

EXFOLIATE:

up & up

For my dry skin, exfoliating is key. You don't want to overdo it and irritate skin but you also don't want to skip exfoliating either. It's the best anti-aging solution and it's absolutely essential especially, when you're thirty-plus. I adore this affordable apricot scrub because of it's ultra grainy texture. It really gets rid of those dry, rough patches. Exfoliate at least 2-3 times a week.

PMD Beauty

This next step is optional but it's one that I do when it comes to special events. I use my PMD (personal microdermabrasion) to help remove dead skin cells and this also helps with the skin tone and texture, too. Sometimes it leaves mild irritations and the skin has dry patches as it sheds for a few days. This is what reveals fresh, new skin. All in all, it takes about five to seven days for the fresh skin to come through. During this time, I try not to go in too much sunlight and also don't wear any makeup. For a major event, I try to do this 10-14 days in advance to allow my skin time to heal from any irritations. Using aloe vera, piling on moisturizers and drenching myself in rosewater spray really helps during this time.

One of the newest things which I've incorporated into my skincare routine, is using glycolic resurfacing face pads. I'll definitely be posting an in-depth review on these but these help with those tiny little bumps and it's an affordable option if you don't have the PMD and the results are just as good. I would say it's a good idea to space this out at least one week apart, if you're also using the PMD.

THREADING:

I also like to thread my entire face (cheeks, upper lip, jawline, etc.) 2-3 days before an event. So why am I writing about this in a skincare prep post? Well, you know how dermaplaning is to remove the top dead skin layer? Threading is obviously a great hair removal method but it also doubles up as a pretty intense exfoliating treatment that visibly removes dead skin, revealing soft, glowing skin. For any mild irritations, I like to use aloe vera and rosewater and even an astringent helps.

FACE MASKS:

What I love about face masks is that they're totally customizable. You can even multimask, which is a super popular skincare trend which is basically just using multiple masks at once and applying them only where you need it. It saves time and you're not wasting the mask where you don't really need it. For example, you can apply a nourishing mask as needed and then a deep cleansing or mud mask to the nose to extract and pull out any dirt or buildup. My fave DIY masks are usually honey to nourish and exfoliate, yogurt to brighten and turmeric masks to brighten as well as exfoliate.  I like to use a face mask the night before an event.

TonyMoly

On the day of an event, I'll begin with a gentle cleanser and then immediately follow with a hydrating sheet mask. I like to do this right away while my skin is still damp to lock in the moisture. I usually leave it on for 15-20 minutes or so while I'm styling my hair. Yes, I style my hair before makeup. You can even pop these in the fridge for about 10 minutes or so beforehand to de-puff the skin and it provides a nice cooling effect, too!

MOISTURIZE:

Next, I apply a generous amount of hyaluronic acid all over my face and lips which visibly minimizes the effect of fine line and wrinkles and of course, it hydrates and plumps up the skin! Then, I go in with a moisturizer which is usually my fave face oil.

JADE ROLLING:

If I have a few extra minutes to spare, I like to use my jade roller, next. The stone across the skin, instantly de-puffs and smooths out the skin. I swear I can see instantaneous results and my skincare products really get soaked into the skin, when I do this step!

ROSEWATER:

I then, re-apply a tiny bit of face oil again,  tapping it into the skin with my fingertips and finally, finish with 3-4 generous spritzes of rosewater. This adds an extra layer of hydration and adds a barrier between the skincare and makeup.

I allow 10-15 minutes before applying my fave face primer and then it's time to get glam!

That's it, this pretty much sums up how I prep and moisturize my dry skin for the perfect, flawless canvas. I hope this helped and please comment below on how you prep your skin before makeup application!

XOXO, Mandy
