13 Incredible Editorial Mermaid Look Ideas

In a recent post, we bought you 31 Mermaid Inspired Look Ideas!

Now, let's step inside the editorial realm of art and creativity where mermaids come to life!

These look ideas are a mermaid lover's dream and would be perfect for any costume party including Halloween, which it's never too soon to start planning for especially if you're going for an extra elaborate look!

MERMAID SCALES:

When you think of mermaid makeup, one of the first things to come to mind is "mermaid scales." Rock colorful scales by creating sporadic dots in various sizes and colors framing the eyes. Stick to a mermaid color palette in blue, green and purple. Embellish the look with glitter.

Since mermaid scales are prismatic, create an ombre gradient using eyeshadows. Use a color palette in sage green, old gold and purple taupe to create the base. Then, use a vibrant aqua hued liner to create connecting triangular or diamond shapes to create a "scaly" type look. Remember not to keep the design pattern to precise or perfect as the scales should be in different sizes and shapes. Embellish with rhinestones and glitter!

Use fishnets as a stencil to create quick mermaid scales. You can apply multiple shades by layering the shades over each other for an ombre effect. Think outside the box and embellish the look with nautical items from your local craft store!

Enhance the look with bright shades like white by framing the face to create a pop art effect. An ombre lip sets the mermaid mood.

EDITORIAL MERMAID:

Editorial makeup gives life to fantasy and mythical characters and creates a fictional space where these visions are brought to life.

You too can use the art of light and shading to transform into a mesmerizing mermaid!

Carve out sculpted mermaid cheekbones complete with ombre scales and of course, a reflective, mermaid highlight. Pop on fantasy lashes and colored contact lens in oceanic hues. Bring down the mermaid scales to the neck and shoulders to complete this editorial fantasy look.

This next look really amps up the mermaid scales and frames the entire face with it! We love the shading and contouring with pink and mauve as it brings a "rosy" vibe to the look. Otherwise using an aquatic color palette with purple would make the complexion look rather dull. This look below also incorporates the shade yellow which adds a fun and unexpected element to the look. Finish with your choice of colored wig and embellished headpiece!

We've all seen fishnet scales by now, but this next look takes them to a whole 'nother level! Create an ombre effect by layering green and blue shades for the mermaid scales. Add a pearlescent pink lilac shade on the inner edges for a multidimensional glam look. Embellish with flat pearls, rhinestones and glitter for glam mermaid look. Pop on a red wig to channel your inner Ariel, everyone's fave mermaid!

Ditch the mermaid color palette for a completely different take on a mermaid look. Get inspired by the "under the sea" coral reef by using shades in peachy coral hues combined with sage and neon yellow. Instead of scales, try creating bubbles for an underwater princess look. Contour with shades of blue.

ABSTRACT MERMAID:

If you're not a fan of scales, no worries as there's so many other ways of wearing a mermaid look!

For a 'gram worthy look, sketch out a mermaid look just around your eyes using a black eyeliner. When you're satisfied with the design, color it in using makeup.

This look does require intermediate to advanced skills, depending on the look you're going for.

For an abstract look that doesn't scream mermaid on first impression and can be used for various other looks as well, try this look idea.

Begin with a mermaid color palette in blue, green and purple. When applying the shades to your eyes, think of "watercolor" and allow the shades to effortlessly blend into each other without being too perfect. Exact symmetry is not to be aimed for this look and that's the beauty behind it. Make sure to load up on your mermaid glow and embellish with white dots. Complete the look with an aqua, pink or purple wig!

Take an everyday mermaid look to next level by adding an artsy flair to it! This one again has a more abstract appeal to it and that's what makes it easy to recreate the look.

For this look, you probably want to use water activated or cream products to make it easier to paint the design on. Stipple on white where you want the design to be.  Then start adding blue and purple to the outer perimeters to add dimension to the look. Such an easy way to create a mermaid look without scales and you get a similar effect.

If you're a fan of the otherworldly glow, this look is for you! This is another versatile look that can be worn for so many various costume looks.

Begin with flawless foundation application to create a blank canvas. Contour the eyes, face and nose with purple. Add color back to the look with rosy pink hues and don't be afraid to go heavy handed here. Add a celestial glow with blinding highlight and the more the better for this look! Layer on different highlighting products until you've got an ethereal glow!

The final touch: use aquatic hues to create graphic lines, dots for faux freckles and match with aqua blue lips. Tap on highlighter to the lips for a metallic sheen. Complete with false lashes on the top and bottom.

If you're really feeling mermaid vibes and need something to compliment your ensemble, take a walk in these perfect mermaid heels!
